Classic vintage style at Lady K Loves

I've long been a fan of Lady K Loves neo-vintage designs, helping to bring those of us with more of a vintage taste plenty of bespoke style.

One of my wardrobe secrets, I've been adorning plenty of their designs for the past couple of years since I first discovered them. It's the designs tailored around vintage patterns & styles that first drew me in, taking classic items from swing dresses to capri trousers and making them adaptable for the modern wardrobe.

One of those occasional irks with vintage clothing is getting your head around the sizing, will it fit?, whats the equivalent of that size 14 tag nowadays?, will it be too tight? too short?, will it last? But with Lady K Loves neo-vintage take, it's all the perks of vintage but with a brand spanking new item.

There's certainly plenty of styles to tempt you in across their site. I personally adore the Old town dress for a night out, & their Classic jersey tee teamed up with the new Classic jeans for day wear.

The mis-sizing dilemma

Sizing on the high street & fashion industry has been irritating me more than ever of late. It's certainly a hot topic for debate with size zero constantly in debate, fashion shows putting plus size women on the catwalk & more companies than ever catering for a wider range of sizes, but this is still only in the minority when you look at the grand scheme of things across the industry.

In terms of measurements and size guides I'm classed as a size 6-8 due to my curvier hips. But when it comes to shopping for clothes I can come out of the changing room with anything from a size 12 to 8 that fits well. It's not just chain stores that are the culprit in this either, brands across independent stores are exactly the same. One will be too tight, too low cut, or short, & the other will fit several sizes up.

It goes the same way down the sizes too, in some stores I'll find a size 6 falls off me & nothing in the shop is a sensible fit. This is whats generally referred to as vanity sizing, mis-labelling items or moving the sizes down a number.

That's not the main problem for someone of my size either, most high street stores just don't tend to stock much smaller sizes. The amount of times I've tried something on several sizes too large just to see how an item looks on, then ran back home to order it online before they sell out of a size 6. In all honesty I've rarely even been able to grab that elusive size 6 afterwards & ended up with another lost purchase.

Now to some of you this may just seem like a 'poor unfortunate skinny girl having a winge', but it's not just across the small sizes that this problem lies. After speaking to other women of various sizes it goes across the board. Stores rarely stock plus sizes, and of those it stops beyond the 16 figure with that classed as an xxl size. It's sheer madness.

It's not all doom and gloom of course, there are some shops and brands that have a perfect fit. But it should be the same across the industry, not just select companies sticking to the actual standard sizing measurements.

Some could say that's it's the 'throw away' fashion state of the industry that's at fault, with such cheap, affordable fashion so readily available, most items tend to get worn once, maybe twice without any care to the item itself. Or it's simply a case of cost cutting measures in the tight economy of the past few years.

Whatever excuses it may be it's certainly disheartening.

The prettiest legs in the land

When I first stumbled upon Tattoo socks on Etsy I was absolutely blown away by how stunning and intricate their designs are. With inventive and cutting edge designs that appeal to both fashionistas and those of us with a bit of an addiction to tights.

My own tights drawers are bursting to the brim with designer and brightly coloured vintage tights, so I'm no stranger to printed tights. Personally my favourites tend to lean towards bold graphic prints & dainty subtle designs, a bit of a mix of that stands out against my more vintage inspired wardrobe.

The intricate fairytale-like forest and snowflake designs caught my eye from their designs. Whilst it's still midsummer here there's nothing wrong with planning your autumn/winter wardrobe already & these are certainly on my wish list for the season, ensuring that my legs will look as pretty as my hair flowers.

Roll for victory

Remember a while back, I posted about vintage 'hairspiration', finding examples of vintage hair styles that would suit my hair style & look. Well I finally had a go at it a couple of months back.

Finding some longer guides I could follow, without completely messing up my hair do was a gruelling task at first. Me still behind the times when it comes to some of these 'new fang led gadgets', had neglected to turn to You tube when I had my first attempt flicking through print outs of thumbnail pics from vintage tutorials. Thankfully after a few miserably failed attempts at victory rolls I decided to turn to You tube for some help.

I stumbled upon Classic retro glamour & Lisa Freemont Streets channels, my an entirely new concept to me from the start! But how grateful was I to find those girls handy video tutorials!

Within an hour of flicking back and forth between videos and jotting down notes I had my first attempt at victory rolls for an evening out. It does take some effort to get each roll in place, a lot of hair spray and fumbling around my pin box but I got there eventually. It certainly helped visualising the tutorial, seeing the differences in styles between each video & working my own way to create them. I still have a long way to go to perfect them but each attempt is an improvement on the last.

I've been trying my hand at pin curling, although this is an area I definitely need much improvement on! So far I've got fantastic curls at the front but flat hair at the back, a side effect of sleeping in the curls I suspect.

There's still so many vintage hair styles to try out, some curling tongs and hot rollers to invest in and plenty of pronged clips to purchase but it's certainly rewarding after all the grunting and complaining setting my hair.

Wake up!

So I'm back, after a much needed break from the world of blogging. I'd somewhat lost that spark of creativity that got me posting, but after a few months putting my feet up & taking in some inspiration I'm back firmly in front of the laptop.

The mainstream world of fashion had somewhat lost it's passion for me, but I'd forgotten what initially got me behind this blog; a spot of independent style, vintage fashion, & sartorialism. The burlesque darlings with their sequins a plenty, the Clara Bow's with their flapper-esque do's, the Bettie Page's with their perfect bangs & sultry swimsuits, to the dandy's with their perfectly cut suits; I'd almost forgotten what got me excited in the world of fashion.

I've been diving into visual inspiration and a touch of the kitsch over the past few months; baking quirky cupcakes to trying out a spot of 60's make up, & I'm feeling rather refreshed and back to my old self for it.

During my hiatus I was briefly lured back into the world of writing, taking up a fetish inspired photographic exhibition for a review on Alt fashion (check out the write up here). Which was a welcome breath of fresh air to my usual work, whilst I'm not one to brave latex further than a cute bow hair clip it's certainly easy to see how it's made such a huge impression on the fashion world. But all that sultry shiny fabric isn't for me, give me pencil skirts in printed kitsch cotton fabrics any day!

Time to relax..

Dear readers, I'm taking somewhat of a break from blogging for a while so consider this somewhat of a hiatus of sorts.

I initally started this blogging thing off to post about fashion that inspired me, & whilst I've still set about doing that I've been finding myself somewhat distracted when it comes to inspiration of late.

More so the work schedule's been so hectic I'm barely find time to myself, so for the time being I've decided it's best to take a bit of a break from the world according to Jacqui Plume & cosy up with a pair of ruby slippers for a while.

I'll be back eventually, when a random spark of inspiration hits me. But for the time being consider the blog on a hiatus my darlings..

The vintage 'do, you can do!

I've long been intending to have a go at a classic vintage hair style, with these things it's always finding the time & the tutorials for the exact look you have in mind.

I've long been sporting the classic 'betty bangs', cutting them myself after a few too many disappointing attempts explaining the look to hairdressers. Granted I couldn't put pen to paper on how I do it, it's simply something I've honed in myself in a robotic fashion now.

But when it comes to doing something else with a classic vintage look to my hair I've simply not got round to it before; with the exception of a brief Clara Bow-esque bob cut I had for a while last spring. Now I've been growing the ol' barnet out intending to try some classic '30's & '40's looks out, but where to start?!

Stumbling online you can find plenty of tutorials, all varying in techniques & final looks so it's pretty hard to pin point an exact style, or technique that would work for me.

I can't do video tutorials, it just seems rather hard to keep up to speed with a video tutorial personally for me; so finding a few step by step tutorials has been a smidge harder. But after a bit of rummaging I've found a few handy tutorials that should be worth a go:

quick & easy roll tutorial - seeing as I've lately taken to pinning my hair up in a basic pin back look (merely to tame the out growing bob) this quick & easy tutorial seems do-able in my lack of electrical hair tools state.

Granted if & when I do get around to braving some heated curlers this roll tutorial also seems a tad handy, a bit more technique involved than the previous one so I may save this for a while.

& to finish, this tutorial is actually not far off my current multi pin hair do, minus the ringlet step.

Of course there's also some handy hints & tips in the last few issues of Vintage life magazine which I've already stashed aside with a flurry of notes for more tools to add to my vintage hair kit. Now to brave a start with the quick roll tutorial sometime this week.

Poppy King for No 7

You may be more familiar with Poppy King for her stunning cosmetics line Lipstick Queen, but now she's teamed up with No 7 for a rather exciting collaboration.

Poppy King has teamed up with No 7 to introduce her first exclusive collaboration for a rather special lipstick & lip gloss range. As soon as I saw the polka dot adorned packaging I couldn't wait for the collection to launch!

Comprising of a range of rose, pink, & red shades; in stunning pop art inspired packaging.

"Using the iconic number “seven” for the line, Poppy has identified the top seven reasons why women love wearing lip color and designed a shade to match each reason." Although we don't really need a reason to grab her signature collection, her Lipstick Queen line has long been a firm favourite for her stunning pin up red's, and inventive quirky packaging; all of her trademark notes have been brought in to No 7's classic understated look.

The pin up look is certainly booming across the UK now, with more women turning to a classic understated look so the collaboration really seems set to go down astoundingly well.

The collection is due to launch later this month across No 7 counters & boots.com; I for one can't wait to grab my hands on the sultry polka dot packets.

The A/W season was a rather pleasant surprise for me this time, lots of tweeds, brightly coloured knits, & more darling accessories than one woman could possibly ever need.

Whilst I may have witnessed the hustle & bustle via the internet, it was still just as exciting to see sneak previews of next seasons trends, & designs that will be washing the high street come late August.

I must admit I was even pleasantly surprised by some of the designer's on show at the main event. The biggest surprise of all for me was Henry Holland's collection, regular readers may know I've never been a fan of his designs; the whole 80's t-shirt slogan rehash was a tad overdone for me. But with his A/W 11 collection featuring notes of tweed, brightly coloured knits, & an overall nod to classic cut 20's fashion. I'm now starting to think that he might be an evil genius, with a sly plan to worm his way into the industry by re-hasing horrendous, easily sell able styles to fund his future designs. All the while intending to actually, gasp, make something classical styled with a very modern, bright twist. I could be wrong though, this might just be a freak fluke of co-incidence...

Surprises aside though, the overall feel to this seasons show was wonderfully welcome. I'm more a fan of classic fashion that nods back to the '20's & 40's, so to see an abundance of lady like style on the catwalk was most welcome.

Now to see what the S/S 12 season brings in September; I'm usually not so easily swayed on the spring/summer season but who knows I could be won over.

London fashion week approaches

It's that usual heady excitement for one of the capital's busiest events of the year. Even those of us who lean more towards self styling, & vintage attire can still get giddy with excitement over the forthcoming shows.

Whether it's the anticipation of spotting a new designer who wins your heart, the rush of the busy feet & heels clacking along the floor, or simply just the networking rush.

For me it's spotting inventive designers, not just old favourites but new designers whose collections are a breath of fresh air from the standard. Last show it was Meadham Kirchhoff's unique Nicky Wire meets Courtney Love collection that got my attention.

This season around I'm more excited about the fringe events than anything else; the On | off show's collection by Charlie Le Mindu, A La Disposition at Fashion scout, & Berit New York at A La Mode, are the one's I'm more excited about than any of the main events.

It's the excitement of seeing more independent labels for me that does it, those who are thrown among the big names in the industry but whose work stands out for it's unique look, daring to try something a little out of the ordinary.

When next Friday rolls around I'll be stuck to the laptop viewing the shows from the comfort of the sofa before I'm thrown into the manic rush over the weekend. But of course it's always enjoyable, even just to find that cute new designer in the exhibition.

Introducing Fam Irvoll...

How had I not discovered Fam Irvoll before! A bundle of cuteness wrapped up in a cupcake casing, imagine the result of a rainbow exploding on some kittens... or perhaps not as graphic but just as cute.

I just stumbled upon her work on an industry site earlier this week & wish I'd discovered her sooner. Her signature cake headbands are a cute mix of the retro and the darling over sized accessories that adorn scene kids; but in a good way.

The main reason her work stood out to me was for the press release highlighting my folder for her collaboration with A&C, a valentines inspired jewellery collection designed with the Norwegian jewellery designers.

A collection of quirky and fun designs, "inspired by all thing's cute and adorable", with dots of love hearts, cherries, & sweets. From over sized knitted lolly necklaces, nautical scroll love heart earrings, & so cute plastic lolly pop charms.

The collection is online at A&C's website & should be available via Fam Irvoll's site soon. Now if only I could understand Norwegian to order some!

Weekend favourites; romantic & stunning

It's almost February, the month rolls around rather quickly. Whilst it may be nippy on our toes, and frosty outside, theres that ever warming glow as we head towards the giddy english romance of valentines. For me autumn's a far more romantic season, but the cute & quirky valentines treats that crop out are always appealing. So I've been picking a few of my favourites out.

The range of heart printed handkerchief's at Paul smith are incredibly darling, and ever so cute!

You can't get more romantic than crochets and lace, after finding this crochet parasol at Urban outfitters I think I've fallen head over heels with it! It's the perfect mix of quaint victorian & the ladylike.

Continuing on the lace theme I've been ever fond of Rock & rose's jewellery ranges, & their Fleur lace necklaces are a perfect touch of gothic romance. They've got far more dainty vintage inspired pieces than I could sensibly buy, but these floral rings are also a perfect example of romantic style.

The range of romantic bird cards at diy boutique Bonbi forest are a perfect mix of cute & romantic without being too sickly.

And of course I can't wait to get my hands on the romantic diptyque valentines candles, in such a cute illustrated package the rose candle is quite high on my list!

A little bit of independent style

Regular readers will know I'm one for more independent fashion, the quirky indie designers and labels that set style apart from the catwalk. Whether it's with vintage designs with a modern update, or simply inspired classic style.

It's always good to see more independent designers paving the way, and being given a helping hand by the industry. Fc boutique, by the creative minds behind industry insiders Fashion capital; is a new platform showcasing independent, new and upcoming designers. A sort of boutique for up and coming fashion forward style, amongst the best of indie talent.

The web shop is very new having recently launched, so there's a small selection of labels and designers on the shop, but there's plenty of stunning attire to hand already.

One label that's already been tugging at my heart strings on the site is Belle of London, with their classic 40's & 60's inspired frocks in stunning lace layers, to monochrome stripes. Designer Simon Wang's range has also had me hovering over the credit cards, his modern twist on classic looks are simply stunning especially on the pvc trimmed polka dot frock which even the goth in me can't refuse.

The selection is rather small on the site at the moment but hopefully it'll be set to grow and showcase even more new talent.

Oh it's terribly nippy..

I don't think I need to tell you just how cold it is outside, it's so icy and nippy I've barely stepped foot outside since Thursday. Luckily this year I've been somewhat more prepared for the winter, having purchased my perfect pair of kitten heeled booties for the snow, hoarding a selection of vintage inspired muffs & hats, & spending the past month knitting up my own replica Tom Baker era doctor who scarf; every lady needs one too!

I've had a thoroughly enjoyable winter so far though, getting to traipse around vintage fairs for a spot of shopping and take in some festive treats at the same time. I even managed to slip in a review for another site on my last fair visit to Chester's Utility market, which you can read here.

I'll be looking forward to spending the rest of the month tucked up with another bundle of knitting, flicking through the latest offering of The chap, & enjoying a fair few warm tipples!

The vintage tour part 2

My what a busy few weeks I've had, with an abundance of vintage fairs to visit even with the horrendous cold snap that we've had recently.

I picked my tour back up in Leeds for what was the pop up vintage shop in The corn exchange, somewhat disappointing though as the only pop up store I found was a vintage hairdressers nestled amongst some tables. There were plenty of vintage shops but whether they were part of the pop up fair or not I couldn't tell, so a somewhat baffling visit.

After that I made my way to the Handbags and gladrags vintage fair in Liverpool. Set in the gorgeous surroundings of Kingdom bar, it was a small affair but there was the equally tasty Christmas cupcake section and a stunning bar area so it was quite a pleasant shopping experience and day out.

Then came the last minute trip to Chester for Just another vintage fair, a slightly regular event in the area this was set at Cruise nightclub, somewhere new since my last visit to the area. A grand two floor event with a random mixture of vintage traders and local bands; personally I could have done without the local bands on show on the bottom floor but with the floors split it just meant having to flit across the floor to get in & out.

There was a marvelous selection of traders on show though, and it made for a good last minute day out.

Finishing off my tour I managed to pop a vintage pop up shop in by accident for the day job, I swung by Clothes show live and managed to stumble upon Anita's vintage fair's pop up shop. A vintage fair I'd been meaning to take in but kept missing, so to find it by accident was a great find!

There was a great selection of everything from home wares to clothing, so managed to have a good little rummage and grab a few stunning brooches too.

That's most of my vintage fair going's done for the year; there's a couple more to take in if I find the time but if not I'll be pencilling a few in for January to kick start the new year. I could get used to flitting around the North West in the name of vintage fashion blogging!

Black Friday favourites

Spotting the term Black Friday on blogs yesterday in the lead up I'd hope it was a closet goth appreciation day, rather than the bargainous start of the Christmas shopping rush. Only I could possibly think that! So in a twist on my old Friday favorite feature I've picked a few of my closet goth favourites, all black & stunning!

Of course I can't start a goth-centric favourites list without a black lipstick, it's a shade that's been coming back in high fashion lately so who better to grab a black lipstick from then Lime Crime, Styletto is a stunning shade I may brave grabbing a tube this weekend whilst their Black Friday discount weekend is in full force, so it's much cheaper than a trip to Space NK this weekend!

There's a stunning range of gothic jewellery in Topshop's collection this season, and the rings are by far the stand out pieces. I adore this super large lace covered cocktail ring that's one of the really stand out items.

The abundance of velvet this season has also had my inner goth perking up. Velvet blazers being my favourite in particular, this tailored jacket at Asos is just stunning for a more vintage inspired look.

My favourite autumn purchase so far has been these suedette Victorian meets mod boots at Very, perfectly Victorian inspired for a touch of goth chic.

In my old goth days Stargazer's range was my staple choice, I still grab tid bits from their ranges today, in particular the stunning range of eye dusts which are a bargain at £3 for a tub which literally lasts for years! & in a glittery black shade you can't get more goth than that.

And to finish off the stunning range of corsets by Vollers have always been tempting, in elegant brocades, velvets, & taffeta fabrics so even if you don't fancy fully gothing up you can at least have an elegant waistline.

The vintage tour part 1

It's been a knackering week, I started my northern vintage fair tour a little later than anticipated. Kicking off last Saturday at the Handbags & gladrags fair in Liverpool in the stylish Kingdom bar, which was a quaint affair but still a good day out flitting around Liverpool which is more than worth a stint up Bold street for the selection of vintage boutiques, and the darling Petticoat lane arcade.

After that I spent yesterday in Manchester for the big vintage fair at The printworks. In one of my favourite areas of the city, not just for the amazing Escher-esque Irish pub in The printworks, but of course a great selection of department stores. It was a little less busy than I'd anticipated, and if only the tea party that was advertised had been there that would have been grand!

But it was also great timing for the Christmas fair in Manchester, always nice to swing by the mulled wine tent and I even managed to grab a rather tasty pimms flavoured cupcake from one of the food stands for the journey home.

So far I think I've spend more time at both fairs wandering around exploring the cities than browsing at the fairs due the quieter turn out of traders at both shows, but I'm not letting that put me off finishing the rest of my leg. There's still a selection of regular monthly fairs back in Liverpool next month and the marvellous pop up vintage fair at the Corn exchange in Leeds which I'll be visiting next weekend before it closes (always a good excuse to swing by the stunning arcades too). Besides a lady always needs a good excuse for a jaunt out dressed to the nines.

Stop and put your feet up..

Such a busy month I've barely had time to stop. Autumn's such a funny time of the year it always creeps up far too fast. October was so busy I barely had time to even start my vintage fair tour, but I'll be shimmying on over to the Handbag's and gladrags fair on Saturday to make up for the late start!

But I have found some time to ogle a few items online, I spotted this beauty in September and was dying to see when it hit the stores. I'm aways after more faux fur jackets and this little number by Iron fist is rather cute; a grey leopard print faux fur jacket with a swing style cut.

Carrying on the grey theme this grey feathered cape by Asos is also rather darling, a spot of burlesque, and classic style. But whatever would I wear it to! I'll just have to pet it..

My last favourite find has to be this plethora of glittery pots at Fragrance direct by Nyx. I've never seen such a range of colours, and glitter is my one trashy weakness from my Kenickie inspired days. The turquoise and green shades are on my must buy list.

Now I'm off to put my feet up, abuse the last of my lush stash before a pre-christmas stockpile and road test some stunning new gel packs that have landed my way for my blogging work for alt fashion, what a better excuse to start my fair tour this weekend.

A vintage tour across the north

Normally you'd be hard pushed to find anything outside of the Southern borders but lately it seems like there's been quite a boom in vintage fairs and markets 'up north.

Liverpool has always been a city that's fashion forward, you'd be hard pushed not to stumble across an independent boutique, or vintage shop whilst pursing the streets of the city. So it comes as no surprise that the city is also home to not just one major vintage fair, but now several.

After stumbling across this plethora of fairs it only seems right to spend my autumn/winter doing a bit of vintage shopping, and these fairs seem to be the pick of the bunch for a bit of variation throughout the season.

Liverpool's big vintage fair launched earlier this year, a fair with a difference you'll find not just stalls in abundance but also vintage fashion shows. The next fair will be at the stunning surroundings of the Met quarter on the 30th, with a Manchester branch of the fair raiding the print works next month.

Vintage fashion fairs appear to have snuck up on me out of the blue, a north west based touring vintage fair which will be hitting Chester through to Liverpool this autumn & winter. A tad more for the entry price, but it's not just vintage fashion but also antiques and textiles throughout the fair.

Handbags and gladrags is another newcomer to Liverpool, launched by vintage shop Snooky Ookums the fair features both vintage attire and designers in the stylish settings of Kingdom cocktail bar. With a cupcake and cocktail room, plus free entry and two fairs next month on the 6th and 27th.

Pillbox vintage fairs are one of the busiest in the city, with regular fairs on the second and last Sunday of the month alongside vintage shopping nights the first Thursday of the month. So if you manage to miss one, you can easily pick another to pop along to.

What more an excuse does a lady need to do a spot of vintage Christmas shopping this season!

Gothic darkness; new topshop make up collection

It doesn't seem too long ago since the news first emerged that Topshop were launching a new make up range, now months on since the collections launch the new season collection has been unveiled and it's got quite a gothic feel to it.

The new collection "Heavy Duty" is noted as "an unapologetic homage to LA's bohemian grunge aesthetic", pulling in Topshop's key looks for the season with notes of gothic black's and dark shades in abundance.

Carrying on with the essential pieces the new collection features chunky eye crayons in greys, lipglosse's in dark reds and purple shades, & gel eyeliners.

The loose kohl dust, brick red 'volt' lip gloss, & 'thunder' eyeshadow duo are my firm favourites amongst the collection.

It's only limited edition though so I'll be stocking up and grabbing my favourites.

Nail wraps; the new nail varnish?

Ever wanted the unrealistic for your nails?, the unobtainable manicure? I've just stumbled upon the latest trend that is nail wraps, that's right a wrap for your nail.

Nail wraps are transferable wraps that you can place over your nails, sort of like a tattoo transfer for the nails but with a lot more concentration and effect required.

They come in little sheets that you can trim down to your preferred size and apply using a handy hairdryer, and a gentle but firm touch.

It seems like the easier, quick fix to a full on nail art job at your local salon but with some incredibly inventive patterns available from woven lace patterns to leopard prints.

I'm not too sure if I'd have the patience to apply them, let alone cope with them for a week on my nails, but it sure beats a standard coat of varnish.

Forever 21 lands

After a recent excursion to Birmingham I was quite surprised that this little news nugget had passed me by as I spotted a giant Forever 21 board in the bullring.

The U.S brand has often been compared to H & M for it's affordable fashion and style. I've long been envying the bargainous finds of U.S bloggers from Forever 21 and now it seems we're not long off having the UK's very first branch of Forever 21.

Looking at the U.S site I can just hope that we have similar lines with the launch over here. The knit dresses, slouch tops, and endless range of jewellery is enough to make you overload your basket.

The store is still in the process of development over here & according to industry insiders it won't open until early 2011 but plans for further branches across the UK already seem to be in discussion. Here's hoping it lives up to it's marvellous comparisons.

Delightfully scented

20 years on who'd have though scratch & sniff would make a comeback? Designer Helen Rochfort; who's delightfully quirky bags have had me gleeing for years, has brought back scratch & sniff with a fashionable note.

Her latest autumn/winter range sees a selection of 3 scratch and sniff designs are part of the collection. I adore this cute cherry print for a touch of classic quirkyness. Not sure how I'd feel about having a sweet scented bag but perhaps the scents will win me over, I'll be poking at them in store when the collections make an appearance soon.

Someone goes & surprises you with perhaps the most unimaginable lipstick ever.

I thought I was going mad the other day when I read about Paul & Joe's cat lipstick, turns out I wasn't going mad at all; it actually exists.

I'm not sure if I'd want to attempt applying a cat shaped lipstick, but I must admit it does look adorably eccentric; & the shades stunning to boot. More a collectible than an actual wearable lipstick.

I adore a good bit of elegant home ware, it can spruce up any place & personally it gives me that little fuzzy feeling of delight inside.

I don't know what it is about this time of the year that has me on a real kitchenware kick but I've been utterly gleeful about it lately. But you can't beat a good plate, cake stand, & vintage china.

One site that's had me giddy with excitement over their selection of whimsical home wares is Wysteria Lane. With vintage tea cups, darling tea pots, & trays; all in stunning designs & shades.

The tea cups, and 'tea bag' saucers in particular have caught my eye for afternoon tea essentials.

You can't beat the selection of darling plates, & cake stands at Urban Outfitters either. The new autumn selection screams afternoon tea in a delightfully quirky manner, if only their over sized tea cup garden pot was actually functional!

What a busy month, there's no more pleasant way to finish off July then with a tea party toast & a vintage fair!

Popping back to the le 'ol haunt for this marvellous vintage market tomorrow. A combination of shopping, music, & to top it off nicely a tea party toast; how fabulous!

I'd actually been meaning to swing by one of Utility's monthly markets for ages now, so what better an excuse when it's a shindig of a day.

I've also just discovered in a fitting fashion, Vintage life magazine. A bi-monthly magazine deciated to all things vintage. The online preview shows just how wonderful a selection of features they have; it's not just vintage fashion, it's also beauty, lifestyle, home ware, & even baking!

The 2nd edition arrived in my letterbox today and I'm set up for a nice evening read with a cuppa & some scones.

This month has literally flown by, it barely seems like the first week of the month. I've still made time to window shop; or web window shop as it were & also pick out a few favourite pieces.

I've been a beauty binge this month, the sun burning away at my skin must be reminding me to stock up on essentials. Naturally of course they have to be a bit different!

The new range of Doll Face cosmetics at Dolly dagger have been working their way into my wishlist. A u.s brand, doll face has a stunning range of classic inspired products with some stunningly named cleansers, masks, & scrubs. Now I just need to whittle my list down to 1 thing to try out!

A little cheer me up has also been finding that my local Boots now has a Models own counter; the 2 for £8 offer has also had me picking round the counter testing favourites from the web shop. The tinted lip balm, & pastel shade nail varnishe's are a summer favourite at the moment.

Not to forget the collection of Rose & co balms too; having had the rose petal salve on my list for some time (purely neglect on my part to remember to grab some!), I'd almost weighed myself down with treats.

Then there's the difficult pick of a perfect day to day spf moisturiser to suit the rest of the summer months. I think I've found a winner with the Clinique Super city block; an spf of 40 is surely enough to maintain a pale complexion throughout the rest of the summer!

And of course if you haven't had time to swing by the Illasmasqua web store lately, theres a marvellous 50% off section with some stunning to be discontinued items for grabs till the end of the month.

What a glorious fortnight it's been, sure my wool knit skirts may have been sticking to me in the work place, and my Illamasqua glosse's liquifying even more in my bag but it's been a change of pace from the horrendous cold winter, and traditional wet British summer. Saying that though I'm still caking myself in as much sunscreen as possible; I'm English I can't tan!

In between enjoying the summer, and drinking my body weight in frappucinos I have found some time to hunt out some favourites this week.

For a bit of quirky vintage taste I adore these typewriter key rings at Rock 'N' Rose. A touch of vintage style that sets a more unique finishing look.

90's style seems to be coming back with a vengance this year; the one aspect I'm glad to see back is the Kinderwhore look (babydoll dresse's, peter pan collars, & oodles of lace with a grunge twist). Ever after the perfect babydoll inspired top I adore this new addition to Collectif's range; the Imelda top has the perfect puff sleeves with a flattering cut.

There's even a wide range of perfect babydoll dresse's, with oodles of lace, peter pan collars, & polka dot prints in Primark's summer range.

And for the perfect sale's purchase I had to grab these Vivienne Westwood inspired flats at Office. With a darling heart and pointy toes they are the perfect work foot wear!

The perfect sunglasses

During this epic bought of actual summer weather (such a rarity over here!) I've been trying on sunglasses left, right, and centre over the past few weeks.

Normally as a glasses wearer I tend to forget to check about getting prescription lenses in designer glasses so I tend to leave them, but as of this summer I've decided to finally bag myself a good handy pair of prescription designer glasses.

Picking an actual shade to suit both my sartorial style, and my face has been rather fun; this season so many designers have actually been on my wavelength. Tom Ford's latest collection have been largely influenced by the 60's taking direct inspiration from his film A single man. I adore the cross over effect glasses, and large cream coloured frames.

Paul Smith's range has also had me grappling at the shelves; the tortoise shell styled designs, and retro inspired plastic frames are just stunning.

Then there's the stunning large bug eyed frames of Miu Miu; in a stunning purple shade with pink lenses.

I am finding myself more drawn to the stunning retro 60's inspired designs available, with such choice even further afield I am finding myself rather spoilt! Now to just whittle it down to a pair, or at least two...

My where has the time gone! It's been such a hectic fortnight at the day job that all else has been pushed aside, but I've distracted myself greatly over the past week with a few treats & future wants.

Taking a touch of the adoreable, mixed with my dark side; ever a fondness for zombie related cuteness when I found this Zombie pussy dress by Katie Crush I almost died! It's such a cute cut dress, with a slightly gorey but adoreable print.

Continuing the cute diy touch, I've long been a fan of Clutterfly for their cute take on tattoo inspired jewellery. This newest addition of a tiger heart design is just darling; & reminds me of one of my 90's faves Kenickie.

Even though it's taken me weeks to finally have a test of the new make up range at Topshop I've already found a few favourites. I'm adoring the bargainous pots of glitter, & pastel nail varnish shades; particularly the lemon sorbet like Bees knee's shade, such a darling summery shade!

And on a finally summery note, this Breton tunic at Urban Outfitters is the perfect long summer tee; heck if I'm feeling brave enough I may just team it up with some bright tights!

Jean Paul Gaultier for Melissa

We've already had the darling plastic wedges, flats, & winged heels of the Vivienne Westwood for Melissa collaboration with the company renowed for their stunning plastic heels. Now comes the newest collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier.

I wasn't sure what to expect, stripey heels, or jaged heels but the preview so far of the interweaving plastic strips and thin heel does look wonderfully effective. Taking the best elements out of his designs and taking a twist on Melissa's classic plastic designs.

The full collection debuts shortly next month and with the already stunning heel unveiled I can't wait to see the rest!

Nails inc meets Diet Coke

I've long adored Nail's Inc collections for their quirky place names and outstanding quality nail varnish (I've had one bottle of top coat for 5 years that's still going strong!).

Their latest venture sees them teaming up with Diet Coke to collaborate on a limited edition collection of nail varnish's. The collection consists of four shades in vibrant purple, pink, red, & a modest cream shade, all named after worldwide cities.

The limited edition ranges are now available in Boots as a special offer when you buy bottles of Diet coke up to June 30th. Now I know where I need to raiding during my lunch break!

The vibrant purple 'Paris', & cream 'London' shades are my favourites to nab at the moment during my break!

Such a busy week, I've been up & down the country in the name of work; resting my weary feet in style. Whilst it's seemed more like winter than summer this week at least my selection of Primani vintage inspired umbrella's have been put to good use!

Here's a few of my favourite finds this week, and a few future wishlist items.

Want pin up on a budget? I've just discovered that Alt brand Living dead souls have a selection of stunning frocks in their new range. This pinstripe number really caught my eye.

Talking of pin up frocks I've also been eyeing up the selection at Vivien of Holloway after catching a feature in the previous issue of The Chap. With a selection of pencil dresse's to die for.

I'm always a sucker for a beauty bargain too, Pop beauty have long been one of my high street faves for their selection of glitter kits a few years back; so how glad was I when I found that discount shop Direct Cosmetics have got a few of their old stock items in store! Now to just settle my wishlist down to a few items from several!

I couldn't have hit Ctrl + D fast enough when I spotted this, it screams of my long standing fashion idol Candida Doyle (Pulp); whose rainbow stripes and plastic rings have long affected my wardrobe choices.

It's the right combination of knitwear, rainbow stripes, and quirkyness with a darling bow on top. Now to just raid my local Miss Selfridge to find one!

The world of make up over here has just got that bit more exciting over the past few weeks; this week saw the final unveiling of the Topshop make up collection, through to U.S fave Lime Crime hitting Space NK counters last month.

I was already rather excited by the announcement earlier this year of the new Topshop make up range, I was an avid Topshop make up raider back in my late teens when they used to run their own range amongst the likes of Pop beauty. So to hear that they were bringing make up back to their stores was fantastic news.

The Topshop collection is far more mammoth that I could have imagined; crammed with crayon pencils in bright glittering blues, cute multi-coloured lipglosses, & an astounding wide range of nail varnishes.
Not to forget the packaging, with a mixed of sketched polka dots and stripes adorning each individually designed item. They've certainly made a real effort with the range, bursting with in season pastel nail shades, coral lipsticks & glosses, to glittering bright eye shadows, & crayons.

Of course then there was the launch of U.S label Lime Crime at Space NK late last month. A brand I've already harped on about for their wonderful range of shades in matte shades; I've long searched for a bright blue lipstick in a matte shade!

To be able to pick up their range in a nearby UK branch is fantastic, even more so to get to play with each shade in person & truly define which shades suit me. Now my list has essentially grown from the 1 shade, to at least 3!

Not to forget the much awaited launch of Illamasqua's Body electric's range, bursting with illumination's, and bronze hues. The dazzling metallic Liquid metal and vibrant blue nail varnish are stand out pieces for those us not quite brave enough to venture into the bronzer's and oil's.

That rare glimpse of free time; looking forward to a good 3 day weekend to catch up on everything I've missed over the working week. But whilst I attempt to sit back and relax armed with the laptop here's a few treats I've found this week.

On the hunt for more good heels for work wear; it's always handy to have another co-ordinating pair knocking around! & I've fallen for these darling heels at Office; I am easily swayed by good mary jane style heels!

If only my local branch of Hawes & Curtis didn't close down last year; I've only just spotted their selection of short sleeved shirts. This stripey number is perfect & just what I've been poking around for as work wear.

I've already banged on about how cute the Lime Crime lipstick collection is so I was delighted to spot that they've arrived at my local Space NK. Centrifuschia is outstandingly bright up close, and I'm already planning to pop back and grab My beautiful rocket.

Then of course there's the latest issue of The chap which I managed to pick up last weekend; worth it alone for the new addition of The chapette section for a mention of my favourite tea room, Betty's in York.

Now I just need my monthly subscription of Nylon to drop through the post box and I'm all set!

Dear high street...

I think I've finally fallen out of love with you...

If it's not your unflattering cuts, horrendous choices of trims or colouring on clothing, or just simply ignoring actual size guides altogether; it's all gotten too much for me.

I'm sick of having to settle for pieces when I'm in need of a quick work suitable piece when one of my other high street pieces has worn away, or gotten to the point of no repair.

Of course with my particular style tastes I tend not to buy too many choice high street pieces regularly, but living between cities it makes it's that much easier to pop to the nearer of the two for the occasional purchase and shop.

Having to raid the changing room armed with 2 of each item (in different sizes), to walk out without a single thing that fits properly, or flatters my figure. Clothing shouldn't make you feel like you need to loose more weight to fit into the almost right dress, or roll up the jean leg hem a good 3 inches so they don't drag under your heels.

And if it's not that then the choices available aren't paticularly appealing; give or take the odd nautical or parisian inspired tunic top I've not exactly been running to the rail to grab that choice piece lately.

Whereas I've never had an issues with sizing, fit, style, or comfort when it comes to designers pieces, or independent retailers.

I think the past week of traipsing around stores in my lunch hour to find new items that fit has been somewhat of a final straw for me. Whilst I admittedly still won't stray too from M & S for their lingerie, I think in the months to come I'll be saving up for designer pieces every few months instead. It may mean I won't have any new ensembles for work for a while; but I'd much rather save for that flattering frock, than a tight cuffed shirt and loose at the waist skirt combo.

Put your blogging foot forward

A few years ago the very notion that a blogger could have the power to dictate fashion & style trends would have been laughed at; nowadays it's a growing flurry of interest both in the media and with readers.

Bloggers are turned to for fashion advice, cutting edge style, and tips from real women who wear the very clothing, cosmetics, & accessories that we've been eager to buy.

I've noticed a growing trend in the mainstream press turning to bloggers for their advice, style, and words particularly more so in the past year. Of course this has been largely noticeable with bloggers attending London fashion week as regularly as the staff of Vogue & Elle, to blogger profile features in magazines. But it also seems to have sparked a flurry of inspiration to younger bloggers to get involved & start their own fashion blog up.

It's certainly inspiring to see such fresh, inventive perspectives on fashion from younger bloggers. From the ability to inspire with Body image positive features, to cutting & pasting their own on line 'zine's, and street fashion photography.

But where do we go from here?, with bloggers already cutting through the red tape at fashion events and catwalks what's next for bloggers to cut the mark through? Will we see key bloggers taking on roles at printed publications, or taking to the red carpet for style tips and shots of inspiration.

It's certainly a fashion forward time, with technology and social networking helping us all to blog more frequently and actively than we would have several years ago. Whilst you can't beat a good sit with several magazines for seasonal inspiration, you can also get a wonderful spark of creativity from a bloggers; whether it's diy tips and tutorials, style advice, or simply photography inspiration.

The easter weekend is looming upon me & I've just about sat down for a weekend rest. Whilst I prep for a weekend of munching on chocolates and relaxing here's a few of my favourite finds I've been bookmarking this week.

I've been long continuing a trend this season, nautical style; something that excited me when it came back earlier this season. This stripey tunic at New look had me giddy straight away, now to just find it in my size.

On another nautical note, this Nautical nancy top is just darling; I'm a sucker for knitwear and when it's topped off with a quirky bow I have to stop myself reaching for the credit card!

After my distracted fail attempting to find work suited attire last week I finally found well, one item.. This high waisted pencil skirt is just the right amount of retro and work attire all rolled into one.

Remember my continued irks at standard sizes on the high street?; well I couldn't have put it better myself. This blog post on dress sizes over at Retro chick highlights standard dress sizing wonderfully. And there is a wonderfully handy correct size guide up on the post too!

On to a sweet note; I've long been a fan of Cyber candy, every time I'm near the covent garden branch I swing back for a mass purchase of silly proportions. Having spotted that they are now stocking a Giant Pocky stick I may have to make a bit of a big order, I have been craving more apple pocky too!

This week I've been on more of a quirky work wear kick, trying to find items that are both wearable for work and thereafter, with a bit of a quirky but elegant look. Needless to say I got distracted and bookmarked yet more misc finds to purchase, alongside a few work pieces.

The Melissa wedges at Urban outfitters easily distracted me from my work sensible hunt. Whilst the shape is sensible the purple colour aren't technically what I can get away with (in a standard office environment), shame but they do also stock them in a more sensible black.

Still on shoes I was excited to see the Paul Smith range's have landed at Asos. These heart print ballet pumps are adorable!

I also adore the new season designer pieces cropping up at Asos, this Penny farthing t-shirt by Karen Walker is a wonderful contrasting print, and best of all in my size.

The new Selfridges on line store launched this week too, I only get to visit Selfridges whenever I'm in Manchester, or Birmingham so to be able to browse the latest arrivals on line is great for me; possibly not so great for my bank account though..
I've already bookmarked several favourites to purchase, including this cute bunny t-shirt by Wildfox.

And on the mainline Paul Smith site I managed to find one work sensible shirt that I certainly won't frown at having to wear. This adorable polka dot fitted shirt, I love the odd orange button stitching!

I also stumbled upon The gentlewoman this week, the new women's magazine title running along Fantastic man. It looks closest to the sort of women's fashion magazine I've been hunting for, for years! So I'll be certainly grabbing a copy when I get the chance.

Seriously, how low?

After a brief shop around Manchester today I couldn't help but notice how low cut everything is this season; as a smaller busted lady low cut tops just don't do it for me, I'm not one to want to show the world my lingerie poking out of my top.

It seems as if t-shirts, and tunics have a lower neck cut than I've noticed before; shirts seem to be skipping out a few button holes to fall at a lower cut, and every cardigan seems to start buttoning up much lower down.

Maybe it's just my personal preference to wear shirts buttoned just a bit from the neck, or to have high cut t-shirts that just fall a bit below my collarbone. But shopping for a couple of new season essentials has been pretty much harder than normal; in need of a few more work sensible tops and shirts I seemed to just about grab one quirky bow'd t-shirt in a boutique.

Maybe it's just the style thats in this season, I usually do tend to veer more towards cosmetics, and jewellery styles by the season than with clothing. But with my already petite sized clothing frustration it just makes finding items that fit that I'm comfortable wearing that much harder.

Friday favourites; a return!

It's been a rather hectic fortnight for me, but I've still found time to hunt out a few favourites and add more treats to my ever growing wishlist of items!

I've already grown quite fond of Elf for their affordable cosmetics; the latest in their studio line includes the Lip lock pencil, a pencil that aims to keep your lip colour locked in place and reduce feathering, fantastic!! and it's affordable at £3.50 so I've bagged one in my latest order to test out.

As part of my on going attempts to find small clothing that fits I'm always on the look out for xs size shirts. This darling polka dot blouse at Urban outffiters is thankfully in my size! and I just adore the lace trim collar.

Last month I spotted the most adorable pearly biscuit necklace on a passing girl & I've been frantically looking for it ever since; thankfully I just spotted the pearly jammy dodger necklace at Biscuit boutique. Combining both my love of faux pearly jewellery, and tasty biscuits!

I also stumbled across Glamour doll eyes whilst looking for glittery mineral make up this week. I love the Monster mash glitter pot, with it's silvery and green hues it's just what I've been lusting after for years.

And lastly this month's issue of Vogue perked me up with not just a small mention of a few of my favourite 90's stylistas (Shampoo, & Miki from Lush); but some inspiring photo spreads, colourful glitter with underwear as outerwear? marvellous!

It's not all that easy being petite...

Remember my petite clothing post last year? well it would seem that my on going aggravation with clothing sizes continues.

It's not just me of course, I've noticed on a few other bloggers posts in the past couple of months the continued annoyance of ill fitting, and poorly designed clothing for us smaller ladies.

Surely with all the size zero debates on the catwalk you'd think that us naturally petite and small framed ladies would have a ball finding smaller sized clothing but it's continuing to irk me a plenty.

Sure if you have endless disposable income to hand you probably would have no problems at all finding the right fitting clothing; whether it's high end designers, couture, or custom made. But when it comes to a smaller monthly clothing budget you really do begin to feel as if the clothing world is against you.

Is it just the baffling size guides on many a site, the ill fitting cuts on the high street, or just that us smaller endowed ladies in the bust area can't seem to find a top that doesn't bag around the bust line?

The other day, despite my previous experiences in finding outfits that actually fit I stumbled into a local branch of New look; seeing as it was just across from the supermarket on an afternoon drive.
Taking an armful of darling nautical, and Parisian inspired tops into the changing rooms each and every top had some problem with the fit on me. Whether it was the impossibly tight sleeves that just wouldn't make it past my wrists (I have 15cm wrists by the way, something which friends always comment on how dainty my wrists are!), the neckline was so baggy you could see half of my bra, or the sleeves were so long that I felt I could turn them up a few times.
Disappointed I handed every item back to the changing room attendant before I dragged myself back to the car.

This is unfortunately still all too similar for me, despite my epic changing room raids a few months back to whittle down the best high street shops for separates I've still been finding my size excluded from a lot of shops. Size 6 may be everywhere in the media, but on the rails at H & M I have to rummage through every single coathanger to rarely find my size available; and in most cases when I find my size the cut can be so ill fitting that it's the most unflattering top.

Of course when it comes to high end designers I know I can easily fit into a dainty size small Paul Smith, or Vivienne Westwood t-shirt; but on a tight monthly budget it can mean a couple of months of saving to get items that actually fit in all the right ways. So when it comes to every day wear I turn to the high street, and independent designers. But even in those aspects I've found myself disappointed at the size guides, or availability of my size.

The other day after spotting a stunning, and perfect range of 40's inspired frocks by an indie designer I ran to the site in a flurry but upon checking the available sizes and size chart my bust line just isn't catered for. Every site seems to stop at 32", what about us 30" ladies?

I'm almost tempted to go on a custom made, indie tailor hunt now. With my size 6-8 figure, 5ft height, and 30" bust it's even more frustrating finding dresse's that fit, over the strife of finding separates.

But in the meantime I continue to raid changing rooms, flick through the rails, and fine check each size guide with a tooth comb whilst measuring every little aspect of my size to check if items will actually fit my petite shape. Being naturally petite and tiny may be the envy of many another women, but it certainly isn't as easy as it looks to actually adorn ourselves in well fitting clothing I can tell you.

Vintage Goodwood

Now here's something I can dig my heels into; Vintage at Goodwood launches this year, the first festival to celebrate 5 decades of British fashion, music, and design from the 40's - 80's.

Already much talked about in the fashion press, Vintage at Goodwood certainly looks set to be the event of the summer for fashionistas after something a bit different to the traditional festival. Swap your mud and wellies, for glamorous heels and circle frocks.

With an array of fashion shows, pop up shops, decade themed club nights, & even a roller disco! It certainly looks set to be a good mixture of the kitsch, and classic.

The festival launches this August over the 13th-15th at Goodwood estate in the South Downs. With tickets and further details over on the site, I'll certainly be keeping on eye on this over the next couple of months!

Friday favourites; a little belated!

Busy week, I've been all over the place working like a busy bee so I've only had a chance to sit back and nose through everything that's gone on this week!
Here's a few of my favourite finds this week:

Lush's new foundation; after B never closed I was so distraught, their vegan friendly cosmetics were amazing so how pleased was I to pop in to my local Lush and find that they now sell foundation! I've grabbed a pot of the Light pink already, just testing it, it feels amazing!

More cosmetics; as part of my blogging work for Alt fashion's news blog I tend to hunt out a few designers, and companies far afield to keep an eye on. I stumbled upon another astounding cosmetics brand. Miss X is an Australian label with a stunning range of bright, vibrant, cosmetics. I adore that most of the eye shadows are named after 90's alternative tracks. It's more than tempting to order a pack of the pinks with the pearly “doll parts” eyeshadow.

New collection at What Katie Did; I already adore their vintage styled lingerie (if only their bullet bras came in A cups!), but I am loving the new sailorette inspired swimwear, how darling is the all in one swimsuit! (I even blogged for Alt fashion about this earlier this week!).

Nylon; the issues not even out yet in the UK but my copy of the March issue arrived this week. So chuffed my subscription's starting coming in and early to boot. This is just an amazing bonus.

Back in the 90's I used to visit the little make up counters and concessions in Topshop frequently. With a marvellous range of lipsticks and nail varnishe's in paticular under their own label I was sad to see it go at the turn of the century, even sadder when I had to finally bin those metallic nail varnishe's.

But the good news has recently unearthed that Topshop are bringing back their own make up label this year. The collection is all under lock & key at the moment but I'm excited to see whats in store this summer.

The range will be available on line, and in stores across the UK & the New York store. I'm waiting with baited breath to see if it's as stunning as the past ranges were!

The other day whilst rummaging through my shelves to pick out a perfume I spotted a lone gift set of Paul Smith “Floral” that I'd completely forgotten I had At that point when I hovered back from the designated perfume shelf in my bedroom I realised just how much I actually own.

“My name is Jacqui, and I am a perfume addict...”

Ever since my teenage introduction to perfumes, one of my friends showed me the adorable collection of Jean Paul Gaultier miniatures they'd recently purchased and I was head over heels with the infamous corseted packaging.

Soon after I started testing out perfumes at my local department store, with a taste for the more unisex styled fragrances of the 90's at the time; Ck one and Clinique's Happy being my personal favourites at the tender age of 14.

But this brief introduction to the world of scent sparked something more; whether it was the darling packaging of the perfume itself, brand loyalty, or an appreciation for scent. I had started to become for want of a better term, a perfume whore.

Soon after as I descended upon university, armed with more disposable income through the university grant I started to build upon my collection of personal scents. From the very bottle of Classique that alluded me, to more personalized oil fragrances from U.S company Black phoenix alchemy lab (in my teenage goth days, this was the height of ultra cool buying from a far flung goth heavy perfumery). With scents of sultry aromatics, and rich heavy fruity notes in abundance. This collection of imps, or samples as you will; from bpal started an obsession, collecting perfumes be it full sized bottles of cute little sample sizes.

Admittedly the habit of collecting samples started out of a student necessity; the tight budget as the months went by meant having to scrounge as many samples as possible, be it travel sized bottles of shower gels to swipes and mini bottles of perfumes from counters. I grabbed as many freebies as I could.

My range of scents was as far and wide as it could be, from celebrity perfumes (oh the shame!), to classic designer fragrances.

Once I'd graduated and gone past the need for constant scrounging I started to move on to the heavy weights; full sized bottles. In my years of testing fragrances I had at least started to settle for personal favourites. With a sense for what moved me, and what had me gagging away from the test strip with a headache.
I had developed a taste for the light floral fragrances; notes of rose, lilac, and orange blossoms; to sultry fragrances, and sweeter notes of sherbet and candy floss.

My personal favourites ranged from the independent; Black phoenix alchemy lab's Alice in wonderland inspired “The red queen” for it's subtle caramel notes, to the sweet B never's “Love”, and the opulent and heavy Paul smith's “London”.

These days my collection still resembles an apothecary's cabinet of sorts. Bottles small and large, filled with bright yellows, oranges, pinks, and subtle clear liquids. With my shelf abundant in collections from an almost complete collection of both Paul Smith, and Jean Paul Gaultier's entire fragrance ranges, including discontinued scents; to the odd fragrance from different designers, Harajuku lovers “love”, to DKNY's “Delicious night”, and limited edition fragrances of favourite products by Lush.

My collection does resemble that of a heavy addiction; some women have shoes and handbags, I have fragrances. Whereas my collection does allow me to try a different scent each day, I can pick to suit my mood each day, or simply match the feel of my outfit.

It is a perfume addiction but one I'm happy to have. Now my only problem lies in finding more room for new scents; already pinning down the new edition of Paul Smith's “Rose” and the darling new Candy apple range of DKNY's delicious (if only for the adorable packaging!) as my next purchases in mind. I may be a perfume whore but I'm quite comfortable with that.

Thursday favourites

This week there's been more treats on the horizon, with more new pieces turning up on the high street. Despite the majority of the fashion world being at London fashion week it seems that shops have still been stocking up a plenty.

The new H! By House of Holland for Debenhams range has hit the shops; again not being a particularly huge fan of his styles I've been pleasantly surprised by a few choice pieces cropping out of the collection.
With a few of his usual notes of checks, and pops of colour in abundance there's also some key pieces that really pop out like the purple square spot dress with a cute mod flair, to the darling tan satchel bag, and spotty belts.
I'm actually most impressed by the satchel bag it's quite unlike anything he's ever designed! And thats a huge compliment from me.

More of Paul Smith's spring/summer collection has cropped up with incredibly darling polka dot umbrellas, not to mention the amazing mens umbrella with the most astounding lining!

Illasmasquas new pastel nail varnishes have already been talked about for the past couple of months. The latest shades have hit the shops and I just adore the lemony sorbet 'Blow' shade.

These retro inspired high waisted jeans by Silence + Noise at Urban outfitters are what I spent last year trying to find. I may make them one of my very few clothing purchases this season.

& of course the latest issue of The chap has hit the shelves at my local; with not just a darling lingerie feature but also the marvellous & ingenious Rich Fulcher featured too. It's just such a shame my local places in amongst the Nuts section, a lady of one's stature shouldn't be looking up there ;)

London fashion week; day six round up.

And so sees the final run at London fashion week, yesterday it was the turn of the menswear shows. From Saville row tailors to high street classics it was a mixed bunch on the catwalk.
From nods to Geek chic, similar trends from classic British tailoring with notes of leathers at Gieves & Hawkes show, to layering & nods of military style at Topman's collection.

There was a clear divide of styles from the high street designers to the classic tailors. With more heavy layering, from long cuts under shorter top layers abundant in the high street collections; whereas classic cuts with modern twists on short suits were noticeable from the saville row side.

Personal favourites in the collections from the menswear day were E.Tautz's suits with slight pops of colour from yellow bow ties, to orange suede shoes. Tim Soar's mix of casual chic with layering, and Gieves and Hawkes nod to geek chic amongst their classic staples.

London fashion week; day five round up.

Layering and angular cuts were the key notes on show yesterday. With over sized baggy layers peeking out under shorter layers; amongst angular patterns and cuts. Through to a continuation on the knitwear, and checks abundant in previous days.

From a mis mash of angular layering, and traditional tweeds at top cuts of mixed fabrics at Peter Pilotto's show.

Sumptuous mixed prints clashed with all over knitwear suits at Basso and Brooke's show. From printed silk dresses, to knitted jackets and full length silk print suits.

Whilst over at Burberry Prorsum there was a military styled twist on the knitwear, layering look. With tones of green hues a plenty, from khaki jackets and skirts; playing off snakeskin boots.

So today sees the last day of London fashion week with an abundance of my favourite tailors on show today from Gieves & Hawkes, to the marvellous E. Tautz by Patrick Grant.

Yesterday saw more mixed fabrics a plenty, with crinkles of pvc, atop lycras, furs mixed with nylons, and much more checks and knit wears carrying on the autumn trend.

I adored Antonio Berardi's mix of gothic with glam chic; I'd heard the term gloth tossed about last month and this fits it perfectly. Oodles of black, sensual loose fabrics, mixed with velvets and dark dark lipsticks.

A look carried throughout the day, to Christopher Kane's show with a gothic meets Eastern influence feel. With floral brocades on black mini dresses with an oriental feel, to delicate laces and notes of pvc.

With a more grown up glamour look at Roksanda Ilincic's show, with more of a classic glamour feel. With sumptuous silks, taffeta's, and delicate knits.

Whilst over at Jaeger there was more of an equestrian feel to the show, with tall hats, quilted jackets, and boots. Teamed up with traditional notes of tweeds, suede's, and knit wears.

A traditional look carried through to Paul Smith's collection abundant with tweeds, checks, and knits teamed up with tall riding inspired boots, ruffles, and plenty of traditional British whit.

With the key trends already well set in pace over the past 4 days today looks to be an interesting mix as we start to head towards the end of the week.

London fashion week; day three round up.

Day three saw an ever abundant range of styles on show; overall there was more signature checks, and knits on show through the day. From jagged checks in Richard Nicholl's collection; to the offset cuts by Vivenne Westwood.
Another style that emerged was futuristic chic; Jasper Conran's collection took on a futuristic cyber feel with reflective prints, and retro cuts giving it a bit of a Blade runner feel; a similar style carried across Louise Goldin's show with more restrictive cuts.

Vivienne westwood's collection took on the check trend with her more traditional tartan prints; in a vibrant pink offset with stunning shades of orange, and red with her twist on traditional cuts.

Betty Jackson's collection was abundant with denims and gold shades, luscious knit wears, and florals.

Whereas Meadham Kirchhoff's collection reminded me of traditional manic street preachers chic; taking touches of plastic tiaras and bangles, mixed with leopard prints, gowns, brocades, and mixed prints. Particularly the panda eye make up, it was almost channeling Nicky Wire minus the hoover; and if you are wondering yes this what my teenage wardrobe was like plus an extra feather boa for ultimate msp chic.

With such an eclectic mix on the catwalk throughout day three it's going to be interesting to see what today throws up as we reach mid fashion week. Obviously I'm quite looking to Paul Smith's collection later today, amongst Pringle's show afterwards.

London fashion week; day two round up.

As day two kicked off there were stunning dresses a plenty on the catwalk; with clashing tones and prints a plenty, the braver the combination the more stunning.

It was a little different than expected viewing the shows of the day; the two shows that I'd most been looking forward to viewing, PPQ & House of Holland were the two that I wasn't as surprised by. The collection of muted blacks and golds in PPQ's collection was still wonderfully stylish but not as brashish as I'd hoped. As for House of holland's collection I've never been a huge fan; his tights range for Pretty polly did surprise me but this mainline collections themselves always seem too over powering.

On to the personal highlights; I adored the collection at Charles Anastase's show; with a show bursting with colour, from wonderfully clashing reds mixed with blues, topped off with more ruffles and patchwork prints.
The highlight of the show in particular for me had to be the blue shift dress and red rights combo, it offsets so wonderfully!

To the dresses at Kinder Aggugini's collection which were jaw droopingly stunning; with a gorgeous floor length stitch effect number; not to forget the brocade print mini dress.
And with a collection of classic cut pieces, from skirt suits to a darling plain black cardi and skinny jeans combo.

Finishing off with Mary Katrantzou, with a collection of stunning printed satin dresses; with a delightful contrasting faux clincher effect. With sumptuous prints, reminiscent of elegant silk scarves.

Day threes already on a roll with Betty Jackson's show at the early start I'm already looking forward to seeing the gallery from her show. There's such a fantastic array of designers on show today, from Vivienne Westwood's red label show later today, to Aquascutum and Matthew Williamson this afternoon. I'm quite looking forward to seeing what they all pull out of their hats for their collections.

Sonia Rykiel pour H & M

The latest collection by Sonia Rykiel for H & M has just hit the shops. The range, which is priced from £2.99 to £49.99, carries all the Sonia Rykiel hallmarks. With lots of quirky, colourful pieces in the collection; I've already fallen for several pieces without even seeing them up close!

With stripes a plenty, colour notes of canary yellows, baby and neon pinks a plenty in the collection. Amongst ruffled textured notes, and diamante embellishments.

I adore the canary yellow striped bow shirt, diamante beret, and this darling yellow & pink striped cardigan (it just ooozes my long standing idol Candida Doyle's twee chic).

The collection has just launched to a frenzy at Oxford circus, and I'll be sure to raid H & M in the week to pick up and road test a few pieces in the changing rooms; I've already mentally bought the darling yellow & pink cardigan without even seeing it.

London fashion week; day one round up.

This year despite being house bound with a cold I'm adoring the fact that I can still keep up with the latest shows at London fashion week online with live streams of the shows. Fabulous! I can watch armed with a mug of tea and my most glamorous slippers.

With day one finished, this morning sees the launch of day two's shows. So far I've been enjoying the mix of classic cuts and traditional twists. Here's a few of my favourites from day ones shows.

Paul Costello's show had a wondrous mix, famous for his unique, unexpected materials; quality tailoring and classical shapes.
With notes of tweed, and checks mixed with metallics. Amongst classic cuts and gothic brocades.

A similar style that was carried across in Caroline Charles show with notes of traditional cuts on checks, amongst leopard prints, and faux fur.

I adored Felder felder's collection of black mini dresses with ruffled notes and a heavy gothic feel. Carried through the collection with muted tones on ruffled slips and sleeves.

Overall there was a return to gothic glamour with a classic cut. Notes of leathers and pvcs on classic cut dresses; through to opulent furs.

I'm looking forward to seeing today's shows, particularly PPQ with their recent collections at Very.co.uk featuring a bright twist on a traditional mod style; and seeing what Henry Holland can pull out of his quiff.

Thursday favourites

This week it seems like every things been coming out in flurries with new season treats and new stock in abundance. I may be taking Ms Westwood's advice on board this season, purchasing as little as possible in terms of clothes but that hasn't stopped me eyeing up a few treats elsewhere.

The new Summer edition of Paul Smith 'Rose' has been tempting me. Theres a delicate note of Parma violets to it that's just wonderfully addictive!

The new lingerie ranges at Urban outfitters are just darling. With touches of lace and florals on cream, and peach shades.

Dita Von Teese's eye mask for Moschino is just adorable; the perfect mix of glamour with a touch of kitsch design.

I almost crumpled in joy at the new Miss Selfridge range of jewellery; with touches of Parisian and vintage inspiration in abundance I've fallen for the adorable bow earrings and multirow necklaces.

As well as the new range of jewelery fresh in at Dolly dagger with more Parisian inspired earrings and necklaces. Not to forget the adorably kitsch lipstick pens in red & pink.

And to top off the week I'm now officially guest blogging at Alt fashion; an alternative fashion & style site and magazine.

Consumer aware-ity

Lately it's seemed as if theres been a plague of copycat designs about on the high street. From this recent article on The guardian website it would seem as if creativity is dry with the high street retailers this year.

Independent designers are clearly being ripped off left, right, and center by high street retailers, and wholesalers to the trade. It's certainly something that I've noticed for a long while, spotting slight re-designs in H & M from indie labels; amongst similar 'diy' styled necklaces in Claires with each new season.

It's as if creativity has lost all meaning and the quick and easy way to create new, cutting edge designs is to simply take them from somebody else.

But in this modern age of social networking it's certainly brought awareness of stolen designs to the public attention far quicker than traditional word of mouth. With Twitter helping to bring a few recent cases to attention seeing how swiftly the rip off of Lady luck rules ok's Russian doll design was removed from Asos.com it's certainly fantastic to see how word of mouth online and public support for the independent designer can rectify rip off cases.

Personally you can't get more unique than a personally designed, and hand crafted item. It shows a unique sense of your own personality, whilst also stepping away from the current trends with truly cutting edge style.

I for one would much rather support independent designers who truly put the hard work and style into the industry than copycat high street retailers.

Delicious with a cherry on top!

I've just discovered the rather tasty Ingredients range at M & S; a bath & body range packed with fruits a plenty that's almost edible.

Packed with plenty of fruity treats from lemon body butters, to pomegranate shower gels, and raspberry lip butters. There is far too much choice with appetising packaging and bathing treats in the range.

The latest fruit to be added to the range is my favourite, the cherry. Which they've delicately fragranced with the light, tantalising fragrance of cherries, yum! I adore the cherry body butter, which would team up for a rather extra tasty treat with the Ingredients lemon shower cream.

Not exactly a spring clean

Continuing my non traditional new years resolution I've been attempting a wardrobe sort out this past week. It's amazing what you'll find tucked in the corner on a lone hanger, or poking out of the side of a drawer that you'd even forgotten buying.

In the midst of my sort out I've found excess skirts; the result of Primark doing a rather fabulous bargainous pencil skirt last summer, more tights than I could possibly fit into one drawer; including every possible colour combination with my wardrobe and then some, and far more cardigans than I could possibly wear. I really have been stockpiling in the past year on everything that fits! A result of my wardrobe hunt for petite small sized clothing over the past 18 months.

With all this worry over throw away fashion though I have at least been finding necessary pieces in my wardrobe. A Primark skirt does not have to be thrown away if it's still in as new condition! And of course it's all a case of taking good care of your garments even with so called throw away fashion, and if it's not in so great a condition it's all the more a sewing/re-sewing project. I've already put aside several items to re-sew as tote bags!

But it's certainly made me re-think this seasons purchases, I'll be buying less pieces this season but more long lasting pieces that match my current selection as great separates and we can't complain at saving a little along the way for a high end purchase!

Pushing daisies

So rarely has a tv show had me as gleeful about the decor and outfits as Pushing Daisies has. I've been re-watching both seasons this past month and I'd forgotten just how adoreable the show was. It's as if Tim Burton was allowed to re-make Amelie.

It's one of those shows that can make you smirk, and glee at the same time, with a delightful touch of dark comedy and bright theatrics at the same. Another one of those great lost programmes that was unfortunately axed before it even got into a full swing.

Another thing I paticularly adore about this show is the quirky outfits and attire in each episode; from the flight attendant inspired outfits of the Bittersweets taffy emporium staff, to the darling frocks in Chuck's wardobe. All taken with a pinch of 50's nostalgia with a bright colourful touch that off plays the dark humour wonderfully.

It may have been axed before it even really began but it's one of those shows I can happily re-watch and take a few outfit notes from at the time; marvellous!

Does perfume reflect your personality?

My perfume collection consists of heavy rose, light floral, & sweet candy scents with only a similar floral note detecting each fragrances similarities. So what does this say about my personality?

David Pybus of Dragon’s Den Company Scents of Time, has researched over 150 executive women to try and establish a link between scent and personality. It focused on whether there is a direct link between personality types and what perfumes they wear.

You can't help but wonder if perfume choices are distinctly pointed to your personality type. Does choosing floral, and sweet scents put me out as more of a distinct personality?, or is it merely a visual choice as well as familiar notes that help me pick out fragrance choices?

According to the results of David Pybus's research introverted personalities like myself would go for more "quiet, discrete perfumes, such as soft florals"; & whilst being classed as a “Thinker” I would go for "classics such as Chanel 5 and Beautiful."

Although I think my tendency to pick many brands, and scents in my fragrance selection puts me more into his last category; “feeling/sensing” types (who) have a wide spread of name choice, with no one brand in particular favour.

Still judging by that my choices are wide and varied but with similar brand loyalties to my clothing choices. With a collection abundant with Paul Smith, & Jean paul Gaultier in particular; varying to odd perfumes from Harajuku Lovers, to La Croix.

I'd say that my perfume choices are much more reflective of my personal tastes than personality, but to a more distinct nose as I waft past I could be telling them I'm an introverted arty type.

Your perfume choices may reflect your personality right down to your quirky little socks, but for others it may merely reflect their personal tastes and favourite memories depicted in a particular scent. And it's that variety that I adore more.

So cute I almost don't want to throw it into the bath!! Lush have released their limited edition Valentines treats including my favourite the Magic mushroom bubble bar.

Part super mario turned bath product; part psychedelic Alice in wonderland sweet treat gone extra wonky! My fashion icons; part 3

Mansun

Mansun were technically speaking my local heroes; both style wise and musically. I first discovered them when they just released “Attack of the grey lantern”, initially lured in by the fanciful rose artwork which reminded me of the stunning rose shot on MSP's “Gold against the soul”, that comparison alone had me pick it up.

Following my first listen to the album I soon twigged that they weren't just a musically talented bunch but an astoundingly dressed group at that. The punkish stylings with a touch of glam reminded me of David Bowie's wardrobe being tossed at a young John Lydon, the notes of tartan prints, frilly blouses, safety pins, and mascara teamed up with trainers was an eye opening combination. I instantly went out treking around Mothercare for several boxes of safety pins to don my favourite velour jacket the following weekend.

Their choices of mixing vintage classics with new and high street pieces was something that hadn't occurred to me previously, they'd turned me onto an entirely new method of dressing. Picking vintage, and second hand pieces; mixing them up with high street buys soon became my fashion ethos. I'd pick up interesting finds from vintage shops in nearby Liverpool, mixing them up with high street finds I'd grabbed the weekend before.

Since then I've based my entire wardrobe around this method, filled with vintage classics, high street buys, and a touch of designer favourites; choosing to entirely mix and match my outfits each day. Their constant evolution of style throughout the years was inspiration, as well as being the intial spark that got me interested in the similarities between music and fashion; and of course they also turned me on to the fact that at one time, Topshop did make a stunning range of cosmetics. Not bad for a bunch of fashionably experimenting blokes from Chester!

T.M.Lewin; womenswear with a tradtional twist

Walking past their Liverpool branch recently I spotted the most darling mandarin style shirts amongst their womenswear collections. Looking further amongst their ranges in store I found quite a vast collection of womenswear; both workwear and smart casual.

I adore the ruffled shirts; paticulary this pussy bow'd number; and the classic double cuff shirts including some fetching red & white striped shirts that wouldn't go amiss teamed up with an Anglomania skirt.

Retro lingerie with a modern twist

Browsing through new season collections I spotted a lingerie company that stuck out. Rigby and Peller's spring/summer 2010 collection of retro lingerie with a light modern feel stood out with images that have a 60's feel to them with an air of the summer of love.

Already creating a range of luxury lingerie with nods to classic vintage designs with bullet bras and frilly knickers in sumptuous satins, their spring/summer collection features detailing in satin and opaque fabrics for a truly sensual finish, amongst shades of nudes, soft shell pinks, blush, oyster grey and chalky whites.

The presence of high waisted briefs with frills and ruffles also marks a return to glamourous lingerie but with comfort at the helm. Something I'm rather pleased to see amongst a lingerie collection.

Oh the efforts of storage

I'm not normally one for new years resolutions; but one aim I've given myself for this year has been to re-organize and have a good clear out!

I'm making a start on that this week, having done an Ikea shop earlier this week I picked up a few storage solutions to start just a small part of my re-organize; my massive music collection.

Having a huge cupboard full of cds and tapes (despite not having a deck that can play them these days) I've decided to downside a few accidental double purchases, and a few too many singles that I've picked up over the past 15 years.

After seeing a few of the Kassett boxe's amongst my other halfs dvd collection I knew I had to grab a few to incorporate my cds. The latest Kassett range doesn't contain as many exciting colours as I'd hoped but I've gone a mod themed black & white array of boxes. The only downside now being that I have to assemble 10 packs worth of 20 flat pack boxes then store them away until the re-organize is finished!

But I will be teaming them up with a few of the neon pink aluminimum tables currently in Habitat to offset my collection nicely!

Hopefully I can re-organize nicely by the end of the year and of course grab some wonderful matching storage solutions along the way.

E.l.f haul

The result of my 2nd E.l.F (eyes lips face) haul just came through in the post & again I was ridiculously pleased with my purchases.

I chose to grab a few essentials again with a wide portion of my stash being face products. I picked up the hydrotint foundation (Ivory); concealer (ivory); all over colour stick (lilac); lip balm (strawberry cream); eyeliner pen (plum); brightening eye liner (gilded); & not pictured some trusty cuticle sticks.

I hadn't realised I'd ordered so much when my box came but I'm so pleased with the purchases, the lip balm is wonderful; the first thing I tried out as soon as I ripped the packaging open. I'm forever carrying lipglosses in my bag but it doesn't do the trick in winter so I thought I'd try out one of their handy handbag sized lipbalms.

I had to grab the all over colour stick in lilac; the mere thought of having lilac tinted cheekbones pleased me no end! and it's in such a delightful little tube, with a subtle orangey scent.

And not one to normally use concealer I thought I'd give it a whirl for those odd days when an irritating spot or gnat bite crops up that needs a quick covering.

Most of my cosmetics are usually a mixed bag; if Vogue (uk) can recommend Collection 2000 mascara as their make up artists favourite then theres nothing wrong with a bit of affordable cosmetics in your supply!

My make up bag is now stealthily stashed up for the next few months rather nicely!

Oh & If your wondering that delightful orange nail varnish I'm adorning is Barry M's Tangerine polish; a personal favourite I'm usually sporting most days.

A musicial venture

I got so excited and distracted by my new blog I'd forgotten to mention it!

Music's long been a huge important part of my life; it helped my exploration into fashion and pointed me in the right direction.

I actually used to write for a few other music zines back in the day; I was an occasional reviewer for a now defunct Alternative London based music magazine, and used to even review for a few big online zines but most of the 'in' bands I had to review left me so downhearted I decided to concentrate more on my 2nd passion; fashion.

I've long since missed writing about music in the 2 years since I stopped reviewing and writing for zines, and with a fresh abundance of musicial discoveries in my new music bible, Phonogram; I decided to create a new blog for my musicial musings.

New in this season M & S have expanded their make up collection with some stunning nail varnish shades.

I've only ever shopped briefly in their make up selection, spotting a vibrant pink gloss amongst last years selection but the latest offering to their make up collection pops with bright colours, seasonal pastel shades, & stunning dark tones.

With a varied selection of tones from neon pinks & oranges, to pastel greens & yellows, amongst vibrant purples and navy blues.

New season favourites - a wishlist of sorts

It's only early into January but new pieces are already emerging from this seasons new lines. Here's a few of my favourite picks so far.

Paul smith 'Black'; I adore this polka dot shirt with such a cute cut and pattern it's perfect for both quirky work attire and day to day wear. Would also look darling with the high waisted skirts in the collection!

I'm also adoring the wonderfully kitsch cardigan printed top in the 'Paul' range, and the quirky shoe print socks.

I'm adoring the vintage styled pieces coming into style this season. Going back to my fashion icon post on Candida Doyle this Marc Jacobs cardigan is just the sort of cardigan that fits in perfectly with her wardrobe.
The stripes and intarsia spots make such a cute contrast to the gold buttons.

Theres a distinct turn to nautical influences in this seasons collections; not to dissimilar to the same style 2 years back. I'll be digging out my anchor pendants, and stripey tees!

I'll be teaming them up with new pieces like this military dress at Urban outfitters that has such a strong nautical look about it whilst also making a perfect day frock. Teamed up with a few of the heart & anchor pendants at Topshop, and a stripey bow for a darling look.

Whilst theres also a turn to nautical style theres also a lot of vintage, and classic style emerging with nods to outfits with influences of 40's style amongst vintage prints with a modern cut.

Theres plenty of polka dots, frilly playsuits, tunics, and vintage babydoll frocks amongst new high street collections. But it's early days yet with still more new pieces to emerge in this seasons collections I'll be keeping my eye out for more.

I do wish this cold snap would hurry up and pass over. The downside of all the wonderfully crisp snow is the delays to my post and bundles of magazines at local shops.

January has always been a slow month for catching back up with everything though, with the rush to run out and grab sales purchases, the return to normality always seems so slow.

Whilst I'm waiting to grab my monthly copies of Vogue, & Nylon; and for the new season stock to slowly surface in stores I'm having web sneak preview at some of the latest pieces set to arrive!

What with the weather being as horrendous as it is the past few weeks I've taken to doing all of my sales shopping online this year. The only downside being the wait for the items to arrive!

Here's my pick of the best sales pieces I've found.

Wonderbra by Dita von Teese collection.

I wanted to snap up the entire collection when it was unveiled, such classic designs and cuts compared to alot of lingerie out there. Having spotted it on sale at several sites (Asos, Debenhams, & Very) I've ordered a few staple pieces from the collection.

Ilamasqua; Asos have added a few items from Illamasqua's collection to their sale with dark red shades of lipstick and gloss reduced I had to snap up a couple!
Theres also a great selection of foundation powders, blushers, and eyeshadows reduced on the site.

Fragrance sales are always tricky to pinpoint, the best of the bunch fly out quickly but I spotted a few select choices over at the Fragrance direct sale. Including L.A.M.B, Karl Largefeld 'photo', & Vivienne Westwood 'Let it rock' reduced; amongst some great last season YSL cosmetics.

And the one sale that's crippled my cupboards has been the Lush instore sale. Spend over £20 to get a free goodie bag of christmas products, or a christmas gift box of your choice. I got so much in my goodie bag that my stash is overflowing with more shower gel and bath bombs.

New year spring clean!

It's a new year so what better time to have a good spring clean and dust the cobwebs off!

Bathing favourites Lush have announced their 'Top to toes' kit on sale from the 18th - 31st January to help you have a personal spring clean.

Feeling run down with a winter cold I'm looking forward to grabbing this as a treat for myself. I'm unfortunately off ill with an eye infection so whilst I'm sat around all eye patched up I thought I'd take it as an early christmas break.

I'm off to grab a pile of December/January magazine issues to keep me comfortably nestled up, including the latest issue of Dazed & confused with the ever fabulous Courtney Love on the cover (Love her or not, you must admit she's a fantastic fashion icon!).

How darling are these? Bourjois has released a new limited edition collection of eye shadows and blushes decorated with illustrations by Parisian artist Nathalie Rété.

The Rendez-à vouz Paris collection features eye shadows and blushers adorned with illustrations, and a little mirror included in the top. Fabulous!

I adore the Noir Precieux eyeshadow with it's sequin style illustration, and it's a stunning grey/black shade. Alongside the elegant pink blush, Lilas Dor.

The limited range is available from Asos; and with such darling illustrations they are irresistible.

Yet another wonderful company is about to close it's doors; it's truly disheartening when such a unique cosmetics company has to cease trading.

I've mentioned B never a few times here; having discovered their products since the day they launched; being an avid shopper at Lush (their sister company) for at least a decade, I fell for their products instantly.

With a unique approach to boutique cosmetic shopping; their original Carnaby street branch was a little nugget of joy nestled off Oxford street. The vintage perfume bottles and cabinets hosting an array of perfumes, eye shadows, creams, and powders was the closest to an apothecary busting with cosmetics that I'd seen.

They really struck a chord for their bright colourful, and retro inspired colours amongst their range of eye shadows, and cream eye shadows. The latter being the best I've found, almost using my tube of Bramble cream eyeshadow every day; it really is rather fabulous, a step above liquid eyeliner by far.

Of course not to forget the array of perfumes; Love being my favourite amongst the selection smelling like a sultry seductive but sweet sherbert.
The bottles all stand out like a selection vintage collectibles containing fragrant beauties.

I'll miss the company when it closes it's doors shortly; having not long visited the Leeds branch last month I had no idea the company's closure was looming. With new products in abundance, and an enticing selection of christmas gifts on the counters.

I'll be sure to put in a mammoth order of my favourites, and products I had yet to try out; the lip creams were always on my list for the decadent gold leaf on top. The company will be sorely missed, and I can but hope that at least the fragrances will crop over to Lush's selection of perfumes and gifts.

My other passion is through a lense

Alongside my fondness for fashion I'm also a geek for cameras; paticularly lomography.
My most recent purchase has been the Golden half camera, a special camera that takes 2 shots per frame meaning that you get wonderful split photo results.

Having found the camera amongst some fabulous twin lense's, and lomos at Fred Aldous in Manchester I was instantly excited by the format of the camera and just had to grab one to add to my collection of lomos; already owning a Pop 9 and Super sampler, I regularly take keep one in my bag at all times for spur of the moment shots.

I took my recent purchase out on a trip this week shopping around the christmas markets of Birmingham, having only just acquired my Golden half I've no clue what the results will turn out like but if this Flickr feed is anything to go by I can expect some rather unique results.

Is their no end in sight?

Yet another great company's life hangs in the balance & this time it's one the most respected and well known companies in the industry; Lacroix.

After months of waiting on the outcome for the future of the fashion house, after filing for bankruptcy in May it seems that despite interest from several buyers the future for Lacroix does not look so hopeful with it being reduced to a licensing operation meaning that there may be no more couture from Lacroix.

It's so disheartening to see that such a respected, and decadent label may be closing it's doors for good. Lets hope that someone can step in save the label.

The on going petite hunt continues..

As a 5ft 1" lady, around a size 6-8 it's typically harder than most to find clothing that actually fits well. T-shirts should not bag around the neckline, dresses should fall off at the top whilst fitting snuggly around the hips, & trousers shouldn't be so long that I'd have to hem 1/6 of the leg up to ensure that they fit.

This is a dilemma that I've had for a long while when clothing shopping, being of my particular figure I never like to shop online for clothing unless it's a brand I particularly trust sizing wise after having visited them in store previously. So it's harder than normal to just shop for new outfits.

In part of my ongoing hunt I thought it would be fitting to document my findings on my blog; as I've found looking online most searches for petite clothing pull up either rants about size 0 clothing, or arguments about the current model sizing on the catwalk (that's another debate altogether of course). But finding what I'm really after; links to companies who make both petite ranges whilst also catering for smaller sizes, has been more of a struggle than you'd think.

In my most recent quest I've been scouring the usual high street suspects. Whilst most do list petite, and small sizes on their sizing guides or collections I've often found after taking arm fulls into the changing room with me that not much has actually fit me well.

Tops
H & M I've found a bit tricky but they have always been spot on with tops in my size. The sizing is true to the actual measurements & I've never felt drowned in a top designed for a taller frame.

Primark are actually the best I've found for tops though. With both size 6 & 8's being a fantastic fit, for basic petite friendly items you really can't go wrong.

Skirts
Marks & spencer are spot on with their skirts, unfortunately only running up to a size 8 at the smallest, meaning that dresses and tops are out for me but the skirts are again a flattering and comfy petite fit.

Dresses
Both Primark and Topshop are fabulous for high street dresses. With both running up to a size 6 (the latter a 4, amongst a great petite range) I've found their dresses to fit petite figures in all the right places with no bagginess around the neckline, or the bust.

Jeans & trousers
I've found Dorothy perkins are the best when it comes to both jeans & trousers. When I've needed a new pair of day to day jeans, the casual range has been an incredibly comfort fit and I've never had to adjust the hem which is a bonus.

Of course theres still far more places for me to scour through the rails but so far I've found these high street stores to be above the best for my petite, small frame.

Eyes lips face

I stumbled across E.l.f (eyes lips face) cosmetics purely by accident one day and was stunned at the affordable range of cosmetic staples they had available.

After having them bookmarked for a while, & spending a large amount of time piling up quite an order of supplies, I finally ordered my first batch of goodies last weekend.

With such a wide range to choose from I finally managed to whittle it down to just the basics that I needed to re-stock on; primer, a cuticle pen, lip plumper, powder puffs, & trusty eyeliner.

Once my package of goodies arrived (the day after ordering!, how wonderfully speedy is that!) I got to testing out my supplies over the past week.

Firstly the primer, this couldn't have been any easier to apply & was such a godsend with my eyeshadow. It left minimal creasing from my make up during the day, and made it much easier to tidy up.

The liquid eyeliner gets a thumbs up for it's ease of application. A sturdy hard applicator when compared to the usual brush, it was so much easier to apply a quick swipe of eyeliner than struggling with the bristles that I usually have on my cream eyeshadows. Having just spotted the new silver & copper versions I may be stockpiling!

The cuticle pen was a little different to my usual brush applicator pen, so it will take some getting used to in comparison.

The lip plumper was a nice shimmery minty alternative to my usual philosophy lipgloss tube; & the powder puffs have nicely replaced my old compacts.

All in all I was rather impressed with my first order from the site and will certainly be ordering more when my make up bag runs out of staple supplies. It's a wonderfully cost effective approach to cosmetic supplies, with the only noticeable difference to high end products being the packaging, the product itself doesn't skimp on quality at all. And when purse strings are still relatively tighter than normal it's quite a godsend, and a saving.

I just stumbled across Find me a dress; a dress comparison website... yes you did just read that correctly.

Find me a dress is a site that hunts out all manners of dresses allowing you to find the exact frock you are after from one site rather than having to plough through them all.

Being able to search by colour, style, & size is a bonus. As a petite lady it's always a struggle to find who sells smaller petite sizes but a quick search pulled up all the sites stocking my sizes in fabulous frocks. Now if only I could find a way to speed search for kitten heels, and pencil skirts then I'd be sorted.

Mineral make up

By now it's probably a tad out of touch to admit being a novice to mineral make up, but essentially I am quite the novice!
Having seen bareface minerals counters pop up across department stores this year my curiosity got the better of me.

I've used pigments before, alongside eye dusts and pots of powdered eyeshadows; so how different could mineral cosmetics be to these?
Well for starters mineral make up contains far more natural ingredients and components with some going as far as being completely organic.

I've found a few companies specializing in some rather unique shades and products in their mineral ranges.

Lily lolo have an astounding range of mineral make up. From the cover up concealer, I love the Blondie shade; to an array of colourful eyeshadows, including vibrant purples and blues. Natural make up really doesn't have to be natural in colour!

Afterglow cosmetics also do a great take on high end mineral make up. Even creating mineral lipsticks & glosses.

Then theres the mineral range by budget cosmetic specialist Elf. With a range that won't break the bank including a great selection of eyeshadows & blushes.

My favourite find of the day is this adoreably quirky 'Sew much to do necklace' at Hannah Zakari.

I adore vintage sewing machines, they have so much more character than modern equilvalents, and this necklace shows that. With a vintage styled sewing machine charm, set off wonderfully with the gold bow & scissors.

Luella; the end of an era?

Following yesterdays post on Vogue about Luella one couldn't help but see it as the possible end of an era.

Luella is a designer who I only clocked onto last year, seeing her quirky take on the equestrian and traditional british styles. Famously adorned by the likes of Alex Chung, & Kelly Osbourne.

With the recession still biting hard on the industry it's always disheartening to see the possible loss of another designer or company, more so when it's an independent designer.

But with such a vast amount of interest in her items it seems a bit hasty for her backers (Club 21) to pull the plug so suddenly. Here's hoping a new company is found shortly.

The perfect shoes

Footwear is an area thats been irking me for a long while. Being a small footed lady it's usually difficult to find shoes left in my size at most places; let alone in styles I'm actually giddy with excitement about.

I've had a paticular style of shoes in my mind for the past couple of years. Short kitten heels, all black & with a cute bow detail on the front. I may have finally find something close to the shoes I've been envisioning.

These cute black shoes from peacocks are almost an exact version of the shoes I'd imagined, abiet a taller heel than I'd thought but a bargain at £18.

Then theres these adoreable short heel shoes from Paul Smith. Closer to the style I'd imagined for the perfect shoes but far more sensible for day to day shoes, & closer to the level of heel for a starter; having worn ballet pumps and flats for the majority of the time.

Now if only I could find a version thats a close match to the both pairs & I'd be set!

Glitter bomb

Freshly back from an extended weekend jaunt, one thing that really got me excited shopping was the selection of glittery make up out for the party season.

I've never paticularly been one for the party season; more the concept of only dressing up for the season, you should be dressing up at every available oppourtunity!! but I have always took advantage of the abundance of glitters on sale around the winter season.

One thing that really struck my eye was the glitter selections at B never. For their christmas gifts in store they have the most amazing little gift packs to construct glittery, and burlesque inspired looks. I paticularly loved the bling glitter tube sets, each glitter in it a mini tube ready to apply.

I've long been a fan of their ethical cosmetics, the cream eyeshadows are outstanding and a great alternative to liquid eyeliner. So the expansion of their glitter cream eyeshadows has also had me resisting the urge to buy the entire collection, if only they came in the same miniature gift set form as the cream eyeshadows.

For the winter season, glitter-tastic favourites; Barry M have also launched a new Glitter lash wand.
The new Glitter lash is described as "a glamorous and fun way to bring attention to your eyes". And in a range of 6 glittery shades, the gold in paticular stands out on the preview. Not available in stores until mid-November, I'll be sure to raid the testers later this month.

But of all the products I've tried, tested, and thoroughly used over the years. My favourite glittery eyeliner has to be the bargainous £1 glitter eyeliners at Primark. I've got a stealthy supply of the gold glitter eyeliner thats lasted far longer than my Heavy metal eyeliner, or a through applying of Bling bling base, and loose glitter.

A weekend away

Theres nothing like a weekend jaunt; as per usual I spend more time preping and packing before a weekend away. Finding the perfect sized bag, which shoes co-ordinate best with my outfits, and packing enough travel sized perfumes to last.

I love this Stepford weekend bag from JJ's Dolly rockers; it's been my trusty travel bag since the summer. So many compartments, the only problem is which one to place bits in!

My travel perfume dilemma was also solved by the wondeful invention of the solid perfumes at Lush. My personal favourite has since been discontinued but I always have my tin of Silky underwear perfume to hand on trips.

Travel cosmetics have always been the main irk when going away for a weekend. Finding my favourites in small form has always meant downsizing to travel pots or using something else.

I'm glad to at least have found the travel sample sizes of Soap & glory's pink range, & the sweet little bottles of Original source. But if only I could get travel sized cosmetics of my favourites! B never does have a rather handy little travel wrap of cosmetics, but if only it contained my favourite dark green, and purple shades in miniature form! For now I shall have to make do with packing my cream eyeshadows for trips!

All that & I'm off for a weekend in a northern city, shops and museums alike.

I have a perfume stash thats already taking over from everything else.
With an array of fragrances from classic favourites; Classique, & Paul smith London; to new favourites; Harajuku lovers, Love; & Madame.

Theres nothing more enjoyable than a favourite fragrance. One that brings a smile to your face, favourite memories, or captivating and enticing scents.

Already intrigued by the adoreable bow shaped touches to the bottle, Ricci Ricci has fast become one of my favourite new scents.

With floral notes, heady bergamot & moonflower. It's a delicate uplifting fresh scent, yet subtley provocative and playful. Even the sample card I picked up, tied up with an adoreable bow, and the pink bottle of course ties in wonderfully with my current collection, but of course thats just an added bonus.

Retro inspired attire

I do adore more classic styles compared to some of the odd fitting cuts you find nowadays in the name of up to the minute fashion.

In an ever continuing hunt for the perfect items to add my wardrobe I've found a few sites that I've pencilled in for post-royal mail strike splurges.

Mouse to minx
Describing itself as 'where burlesque meets Miss Marple'; this site a wonderful mix of tweed pencil skirts, tea cups, and quirky jewellery. Nestled alongside petticoats, & clinchers.

Dolly dagger
This site has admittely been in my bookmark for years. A wonderful selection of pin up inspired clothing, sits happily alongside kitsch designer labels.
With such a wonderful selection of designers; Vivienne westwood for Melissa, Tarina tarantino, Irregular choice, & Helen Rochford. Theres just too much to choose from!

Larkin & catcher
Such an outstanding selection of hand picked jewellery from a range of independent designers. From framed pendants, ladened charm bracelets, and antiqated brooches alongside kitsch pendants.
Then theres the gorgeous selection of clutch bags, purses; and pretty bookmarks.

Marilyn Monroe

One of my favourite U.S ladies, Marilyn always had the most outstanding taste in fashion and a stunning hourglass figure that's paved the way for millions of curvy ladies.

I properly discovered Marilyn through my fondness of Andy Warhol, and Manic street preachers. An unlikely combo if you aren't a fan of the latter; but Marilyn's image was everywhere in early msp artwork. The image of her amongst the collage on the first edition of “You love us” was one of the turning points that got me digging further into her career.

Her wardrobe of classic knitwear, stunning classic cut frocks, and jeans (which she helped to bring into fashion from the seminal work wear attire) have inspired my wardrobe over recent years.

Seeing how high waisted skirts, matched up with knitwear, or tops works wonderfully on an hourglass figure have had me clambering into changing rooms with arms full of pencil skirts.

Her wardrobe, and look have influenced many a retro inspired company. With the influential cuts seem in styles at vintage inspired lingerie company 'What katie did'; with their 50's swimwear that could be picked straight out of her early modelling work.

Not to forget how she could pull off any look and still look stunning. Whether it was wearing the infamous sheer frock designed and sewn on by William Travilla, or a simple cardigan and jeans combo.

I've really fallen for more accessories lately; one of my recent exciting finds is quirky tights. I already have a ridiculous stash of tights from neon, to seamed, and patterned. But lately there has been a fantastic flurry of tights.

Firstly much to my surprise too, I'm finding the latest range of Henry Holland for Pretty polly tights outstanding (normally not one of my favourite designers per say).
But the collection of quirky prints on tights have really surprised me, i'm paticularly liking these Alphabet print tights and the colour block print tights. They're retro styled with a nice modern touch.

Then theres the spotty trend thats surfaced this season. I've always loved spots on tights but it's been so hard to find a pair that I've envisioned beforehand. Most used to come with large oversized polka dots, or repeat lines of tiny dots but now designers seem to be (pardon the pun) spot on with the pattern.

I adore these retro styled spot tights from Jonathon Aston, alongside the most adoreable pair of sheer spotty tights at Pop my Cherry. That really stand out from the standard small dot pattern.

The other patterns that I'm getting excited by are these wonderfully quirky feathered tights, & heart printed tights.

Not to forget the selection of brightly coloured tights at M & S, probably the most decent quality pair of blue tights I've had, they've outlasted my usual £1 primark coloured tights by a long shot!

New season cosmetics

This season I've been quite giddy with excitement over the launch of several new ranges, and lines that have truly pushed the boat creatively in the lines of cosmetics.

Firstly the new Dystopia range from Illamasqua; a range of monochrome shades with a pop of colour inspired by a futuristic vision of a fractured and dark society.

The selection of dark pure pigments, and matt eyeshadows is offset wonderfully by bright pink lipsticks, and nail varnishes.

I was already excited by the launch of the new high end alternative cosmetics company last year with their range of outstandingly bright shades, but the new noir-esque collection has left me incredibly inspired.

The other collection that has had me just as excited has been the launch of new lipsticks from U.S label Limecrime.

The new Candy future collection of lipsticks are an incredible range of bright, neon colours. With a clear vision of highly pigmented and colourful lipsticks, the range is a selection of pinks, purples, & dashe's of wonderfully unorthodox shades such as blue, and black; colours which I've often failed to find previously.

The Retrofuturist, and Centrifuschia shades are my paticular favourites but I'll already have to wait until the next shipment comes in, with most of the shades having already sold out!

Then theres the new Mac collections; always a favourite of mine for their selection of pigments.
I must admit the new Black collection is equally as impressive.
With blackend Lipglass, and the gorgeous gold toned Mineralize eyeshadow, alongside staple black greasepaint sticks for a handy alternative to eyeliner.

This seasons cosmetics are certainly getting me quite excited, much more than any staple pieces of clothing I've found!

Heart clutch bags; adorably quirky?

I'm still not sure where I stand on the new season heart shaped clutch bags adorning the high street.
I've adored the past examples such as this cute crystal styled clutch from Accessorize 2 years ago.
The cute classic shape is such as adoreable but classic piece.
Same goes for this leopard print version from Asos's summer season this year.

But the new chainmail style clutche's at Topshop are a little different but I'm not as keen on them as previous seasons take on the heart shaped clutch purse/bag. Same goes for Julian Macdonald's take on the clutch for Debenhams, the all over diamante is a little too much for my liking; almost to the point of garish.
Who knows I might be won over by a cute little delicate take on the clutch this season, but so far I'm more than tempted to buy last season's Asos clutch instead!

New season Evian; Paul Smith

Much to my surprise last year I only just realized that Evian had limited edition designed bottles on sale each year. With a different designer taking the label on every year.
Having missed several years of favourite designers I at least managed to grab a bottle of Jean Paul Gaultier last year.

I've just stumbled upon the designer for 2010's Evian edition; Paul Smith.

The design pays homage to his famous stripe design; & I adore the coloured bottle tops, thats whats really going to cripple me; trying to buy one of each coloured bottle top!

I may even make my next shopping outing to Harvey Nichols that little bit earlier to grab a bottle!

My fashion icons; part 1

I've looked up to many quirky, well dressed ladies, & gents over the years. Here I'll be paying homage to a few of my favourite fashion icons.

Candida doyle

Pictured right; with Jerry Hall from 'This is Hardcore' album.

Even at the age of 11 when I first stumbled upon Pulp, I was instantly inspired by keyboardist Candida doyle's style.

Adorning knitwear, mini skirts, & quirky tights; alongside the most fascinating selection of plastic rings I'd ever seen. Part retro quirykness, part colourful explosions encased in resin. The selection of rings stood out in the most amazing fashion, but blended wonderfully with the rest of her look; a mix of stripes, cable knits, pale coloured tights, and bright plastic rings.

Her quintessentially quirky style influenced on me, & inspired part of my own personal style to date.

The major influence on me at first was the plastic rings; picking up cheap but quirky plastic rings whenever the oppourtunity arose, something that I still do today. With an absurdly large collection that must be a small selection compared to her own (which I once attempted to win in a fan club competition).

But the overall appearance of Candida's style; the quirky skirts, & knitwear have left a long lasting impression on me, and inspired a large part of my wardrobe.
