Fish 'n' chips done forties style at Poppies

Take in the forties spirit East end style with a truly British tradition, fish and chips. Poppies dish up a tasty fish supper in true vintage style and with their fresh catches of the day served up in a delightfully eccentric venue.

Poppies first opened their doors in Spitalfield's, a true East end establishment, re-creating the look and feel of 1940's London from the décor down to the spirit of the staff, and what better way to re-create that than with some truly traditional grub. They've recently expanded out to the other side of the city with their new Camden restaurant which continues the same nostalgic theme in a rather modern setting.

The decor is spot on in their restaurants from vintage advertising signs, striking bottle green tiles adorning the walls, grand oak panelling and of course plenty of jukeboxes and red telephone boxes dotted across both of their restaurants keeping the forties theme on top. It certainly takes you back in time and gives Poppies it's unique look.

Of course it's all about the food at Poppies, fish is the main serve of the day and it's literally freshly served, you couldn't get a fresher catch if you tried, and besides why should you when they do all the hard work for you! Sticking to tradition you can certainly expect to see East end classics like Jellied eel on the menu and even a spot of pie. Their fish selection is rather impressive with the option to go for a fried or grilled bit of fish with your supper, whether you prefer to go for a spot of haddock or lemon sole there's a great choice of fish on the menu with all the usual chip shop trimmings on the side.

If you want the proper experience you must try a fish supper, fried up with a spot of tartar sauce and chips and some good ol' mushy peas on the side, you may as well go all the way since this will be the freshest, tastiest fish supper you'll have in London and you won't be disappointed. Of course if fish isn't your thing fret not, they have a selection of pies and chicken dishes on the menu too.

Next time you find yourself in Spitalfields or Camden pop on in for a visit, you can even take out and eat your fish and chips in a delightfully nostalgic newspaper style bag, marvellous!
